Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards reach agreement on Trae Young trade
Sources told ESPN that the Hawks and Wizards are preparing the trade, with no draft picks included at this stage. However, the deal has not yet been finalized. Hawks head coach Quin Snyder addressed the situation briefly, saying: “I know you all have questions for me that right now I'm not at liberty to talk about or answer.”
If completed, the move would bring an end to Young’s time in Atlanta, where he has been the face of the franchise since being drafted in 2018. He would become the lead guard for Washington and reunite with executive Travis Schlenk, who was responsible for bringing him to the Hawks on draft night.
The trade would also give Atlanta greater financial flexibility. According to ESPN, the Hawks are targeting Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis and are also considering using a first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The club appears ready to enter a new phase built around younger players such as Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu and Zaccharie Risacher.
For Washington, Young is seen as a key piece in their rebuild and a potential leader for a young core. His current contract runs until the end of the 2026-27 season and includes an option for extension this summer. The Wizards are expected to monitor his health before making any long-term decision.
During his time with the Hawks, Young became the franchise’s all-time leader in three-pointers made (1,295) and assists (4,837). He led the team to the playoffs three times, including a run to the Eastern Conference finals in 2021. This season, he is averaging 19.3 points, 8.9 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game, with a field goal percentage of 41.5 and 30.5 percent from three-point range.
The Wizards are currently struggling near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 10-26 record, sitting 14th in the standings. The Hawks are ninth with 18 wins and 21 losses, just inside the play-in positions.
