LeBron James issues stern wake-up call to Lakers locker room after disappointing night in Portland
On Saturday (EST), the Lakers suffered a 116–132 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers in the final game of the day. It was their fifth defeat in the last six games, dropping them to sixth place in the standings with a 24–16 record, allowing teams such as the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors to close the gap.
The Lakers were without star guard Luka Doncic and center Deandre Ayton, who both missed the game due to injuries. LeBron James once again led the team, finishing with 20 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. He was joined on the scoring list by Marcus Smart, who had 25 points, and Drew Timme with 21.
After the game, James appeared frustrated but still gave a blunt interview. When asked how the Lakers could win in their current situation, he said: “Score more points than our opponent.” When the reporter followed up by asking how they would do that, James replied: “Make more shots than our opponent.”
“You go out with the unit that's available. Try to execute. Offensively and defensively, as well as you can. That's all you can ask for. At the end of the day, nobody's feeling sorry for us, and nor are we looking for it,” James added. “So, the guys that's available, we gotta go out there and play our game. Play the way we want to play offensively and defensively.”
LeBron also commented on the officiating after the game, as the Lakers attempted only 21 free throws compared to Portland’s 34. “I thought the whistle was very short in the first quarter,” James said. “I think it was like 22 free throws for them in the first quarter. It's hard to set your defense with that type of situation. We gave ourselves a chance a couple of times, but it was an uphill battle.
“I didn't think that we were doing something that was like outlandish or was warranted of certain calls or whatever the case may be. I thought we had bodies in front of guys. Yeah, it was just a couple of calls that were difficult. But it is what it is. That's the game.”
After another disappointing result, the Lakers need to respond quickly if they want to stay in a playoff position. They are set to face the Toronto Raptors (19 January), Denver Nuggets (21 January), Los Angeles Clippers (23 January), Dallas Mavericks (25 January), and Chicago Bulls (27 January).
