Thunder in trouble? Jalen Williams out indefinitely following injury

The Oklahoma City Thunder have confirmed that star forward Jalen Williams has been ruled out, with no timetable set for his return. He will at least miss the upcoming game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jalen Williams suffered an injury during the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 120-122 loss to the Miami Heat. The 24-year-old was driving on offense before losing the ball, then immediately grabbed the back of his leg and was escorted to the locker room. In their official statement, the team noted: "Jalen Williams has been diagnosed with a right hamstring strain and will be out indefinitely."

While the defeat did not affect the Thunder’s position in the standings, Williams’ injury could pose a serious concern. It is his second significant setback of the season, following a right wrist injury that previously forced him to miss 19 games.

During that stretch, Oklahoma City continued to thrive, posting an 18-1 record behind the dominant performances of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren. At one point, there was even talk of the Thunder challenging the Golden State Warriors’ 73-9 regular-season record. However, recent results have reduced those chances, with the team now sitting at 35-8.

Williams admitted his frustration after the game. “I mean, it sucks. It’s a very annoying process,” he said. “Nobody is going to be more frustrated than me when shots are short. This injury is not something where you get two hand surgeries and you’re good to go. It’s over the course of a year, a year and a half, and you need summers to really figure it out.”

Williams's return date remains unknown

There is currently no timetable for Williams’ return. He has already been ruled out of the upcoming game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Although he has previously managed similar issues without hurting the team’s performance, this latest injury could complicate his recovery, especially with the playoffs approaching.

Despite the setback, Williams has been productive this season. In 24 games, he is averaging 16.8 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.8 rebounds. He remains a key part of the Thunder rotation and was previously named to the 2024/25 All-NBA and All-Defensive teams, as well as the 2022/23 All-Rookie team.
